Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a surprise hit for Sony, and the studio immediately went on to develop a sequel to the film. Production actually just started today, and the Rock commemorates it with a Twitter post:
We don't really know much about the plot yet, but we do know that Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas will be returning as the avatars that the game has created for the players. What's also interesting is that the kids from the first film will all be making a return.
As for new cast members, we have the likes of Danny DeVito, Awkwafina, and Danny Glover.
Like I said, we don't know much about the plot, but if I were to make a guess, the game would be making a jump from a retro console into becoming an app that the kids would have on their phone. It was said that an alternate ending for Welcome to the Jungle would be that the kids would have Jumanji game accessible on their phones. We didn't have any hint of that by the end of the movie, so I'm guessing hey want to save it for the inevitable sequel.
While I thought Welcome to the Jungle was okay, I really thought it lacked the genuine horror elements of the very first Jumanji starring Robin Willams. Sure a lot of the story was silly, but by the end you would be horrified at the monsters coming out of the game like giant spiders and crocodiles. Plus there's a nice, heartwarming story to it as well.
Jumanji 3 is set to come out Dec. 13.
