The Promised Neverland is a horror anime series based on the manga series of the same name, written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu. The series follows a group of gifted orphans led by 12-year-old Emma, who find out they have only be raised to be eaten by demons.

From there on, we see their plans and misadventures as to they try to outsmart their foster mother, Isabella, escape and live freely. When the first season came out, it became one of the favorite anime shows of the Winter 2019 season. This winter, The Promised Neverland is finally back with a second season, following Emma, Ray, and their friends after their escape, as they try to survive in a world where demons rule and human are considered to be meals.

Episode 5 was unexpected in two ways; firstly, we were introduced to a demon city, after 4 episodes of the children surviving in forests or underground hideouts. By concealing their human features and scent, the older children are able to move among the demons and find food.

There seems to be a pattern of illustrating the demons as more ambiguous than season 1 would have us think. Season 2 introduces not only demons who refuse to eat children because of their religion, but also demons living in poverty and ailing because they are denied access to meat.

While we root for the children and want them to make it to the human world, it's apparent that not all demons are absolute villains. Secondly, a beloved character from season 1 who was presumed dead, appears alive and well. There will definitely be a lot to unpack in the next episode.
