The Pirates unveiled the first look of the upcoming sequel film, The Pirates: Goblin Flag, introducing all the A-list celebrities that fans should look forward to.

Period adventure films and series have been hits in South Korea and overseas. One of the best examples South Korea shared years ago is the 2014 film The Pirates.

The first film in the franchise welcomed Son Ye Jin and Kim Nam Gil as its main characters. The flick, which focused on the story following the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, told the tale of the missing Seal of State of the Ming’s Emperor. As mountain bandits joined the search for the whale that swallowed the royal seal, they eventually clashed against pirates and ignited a battle.

The Pirates successfully saw more than 272,000 viewers during its first two days since release. But with the coming of its second installment, The Pirates: Goblin Flag, moviegoers can expect more action and hilarious scenes soon.

The Pirates: Goblin Flag Unveils Official Posters

Ahead of the official release of The Pirates sequel in January, director Kim Jeong Hoon unveiled a series of posters that introduced the film’s new set of main characters.

Korean news outlet shared the exclusive photo, revealing the characters who embark on a journey as they try to find the final treasure of the Goryeo royal family that suddenly disappeared soon after Joseon came into the picture.

The new marketing materials feature the main cast – Kang Ha Neul, Han Hyo Joo, Lee Kwang Soo, Chae Soo Bin, EXO’s Sehun, Kwon Sang Woo, Park Ju Hwan, and Kim Sung Oh.

Lee Kwang Soo unleashes his usual comedic vibes and transforms into a pirate named Mak Yi.

Other main cast members include Kwon Sang Woo (Bu Heung Soo), Chae Soo Bin (Hae Geum), EXO’s Sehun (Han Goong), Kim Sung-Oh (Kang Seop), and Park Ji Hwan (Akwi). Veteran actor Sung Dong Il is also confirmed to make a special appearance.

All About The Pirates: Goblin Flag

The talks about producing a sequel film started in December 2018. At that time, they expected the original lead stars to reprise the role. However, due to Kim Nam Gil and Son Ye Jin’s schedule, the team canceled the filming in May 2019.

The creators then spent 10 months modifying the script and casting a new set of stars. Starting March 2020, The Pirates started finding new cast members until they secured the final cast line-up in July last year. Soon after the completion, the filming began and lasted until January 2021.

The Pirates: Goblin Flag will be theatrically released before the 2022 Korean New Year holiday.
