The New Mutants is coming out tomorrow, and while a lot of major Hollywood critics have decided not to review the upcoming X-Men spinoff until Disney offers safer screening options for viewers, The Hollywood Reporter's Paris-based film critics have come out with their own verdict for the film, and it seems like their response has been tepid.
The Hollywood Reporter has been one of the very first trade publications to review The New Mutants, and according to the entertainment news outlet, the only way that viewers are going to be impressed by the film is if they've never seen teen movies, superhero movies, and asylum-set psychological thrillers.
"Generic and, at its best, straining to be heartfelt, director Josh Boone's adaptation of the Marvel spin-off comic series is a Marvel movie spinoff in its own right, making vague references to the X-Men franchise but attempting to stand on its own," THR writes, going full blast against the film, "Unfortunately it rarely does, even if the film's trio of young and tough female leads manages to give your typically male-dominated genre something of a feminine twist."
Apparently, The New Mutants feels as if it belongs to a more innocent time when there were fewer horror films to compare the movie to.
The trade news outlet also takes a swipe at Disney's decision to release the film at this point in time despite the fact that COVID-19 continues to ravage the planet.
Of course, this is only one review for the film. Perhaps other critics might relent and see whether or not The New Mutants is as tepid as it's been painted to be.
The New Mutants is set to premiere on August 28, 2020.
