The MPAA’s Confusing Reason for Giving Suicide Squad a PG-13 Rating

Everybody knows Suicide Squad will involve some form of violence and suggestive language. The movie's title alone, which involves the word "suicide," is suggestive enough. From the trailers as well, we pretty much get the feeling that there will be scenes in the film that need a lot of parental supervision for kids. It's therefore surprising that Suicide Squad has been officially tagged with a PG-13 Rating, especially considering the rising trend of R-rated superhero films recently.

Well, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) (via Entertainment Weekly) is explaining why it gave the movie such a rating. The movie is PG-13 because:

Sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, and suggestive content and language.

We're trying to wrap our heads around this reason, especially the "disturbing behavior" part. It could mean the "sequences of violence" they're referring to isn't particularly extremely violent and that the "disturbing behavior" isn't as disturbing as what actually went on set with regard to Jared Leto's antics for his method acting for portraying The Joker.

I guess Suicide Squad isn't the kind of film to jump on the bandwagon of R-rated comic book films like what Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Wolverine 3 seems to have dome following the success of Deadpool.

Well, PG-13 or not, fans who have seen the movie's early screenings loved it. In any case, fans who are hoping for a Rated R Suicide Squad might see one if there is such a demand when the movie actually becomes a hit and the studios consider making a sequel.

We'll just have to wait and see whether the PG-13 rating is appropriate for Suicide Squad when it hits theaters on August 5.
