There is little doubt that the entire world is already looking forward to the premiere of The Matrix Resurrections this December. However, Warner Bros. had some trouble securing a release date for the sequel in China. Luckily, things have been worked out for the Keanu Reeves flick which is now expected to screen in Chinese theaters. Still, there's a minor catch that could affect the movie's box office performance in the major Asian territory.
Warner Bros. has been determined to release The Matrix Resurrections in China for a long time. After all, it is the world's largest theatrical market and could guarantee the film's international box office success. However, it wasn't until late November that the sequel passed the country's censorship and is now expected to be released in China on January 14, 2022.
That's a rather late date considering that Matrix 4 will be released in December elsewhere in the world. However, the studio is hoping that the country will hold out and wait until the film is released in theaters in January.
Although Warner Bros. is staying hopeful despite the late release date, there are real concerns for The Matrix Resurrections. Some would point out that there is a huge risk of piracy since the movie is being released a full month earlier in other territories. In addition to that, the movie will get simultaneous release on HBO Max which could affect its box office numbers.
The Matrix Resurrections will follow Neo, who has been living as Thomas Anderson and has forgotten all about his past. However, things change when he meets Trinity again and although they don't recognize each other, Neo realizes that things are not quite what they seem. Will he take the red pill again? We'll find out later this year.
The Matrix Resurrections premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
