Last week's episode of The Mandalorian may have been Rosario Dawson's debut in Star Wars, but did you know that it was also a mini reunion for her and some puppeteers from Men in Black II?
Talking to Vanity Fair, Dawson reveals that the people who were working on the Grogu puppet were the same people who were doing the worm guys from the Men in Black sequel. When asked what it was like working with Star Wars' biggest mascot, Dawson says:
"… Actually some of the guys who worked with Grogu werefolks I had met before, because they worked on Men in Black II with the worm guys. So it's like, these people have been doing this for a really, really long time, and there's several different guys, and one controls the ears, and the other one the eyes, and the arms are moving. You're holding this adorable, unbelievably cute, tiny little creature, and it's blinking, it's looking at you, and its mouth is moving, and its ears are moving, and it's so soft, the little hairs on its head. [Sighs.] I mean, it's unbelievable."
For context, here's one scene with the worm guys from Men in Black II with Dawson and Will Smith:
Just imagine, Men in Black II came out back in 2002, and 18 years later, the puppeteers in that film found themselves working on Star Wars with the same actress. Although there is a big reliance on CG when it comes to film and TV nowadays, it's great that Star Wars has managed to mix the best of both traditional and modern filmmaking techniques to breathe a unique kind of life in its universe.
