While a lot of questions had been answered when Ahsoka finally showed up in The Mandalorian, fans were left with a lot of questions; one of them asking when this story takes place in relation to Star Wars Rebels. Clone Wars creator and Mandalorian director Dave Filoni tries to clarify things a little by hinting that the epilogue of Rebels takes place after Ahsoka meets Din Djarin on the show.
When asked by Vanity Fair about Ahsoka's mission with Sabine to find Ezra and Thrawn, Filoni answers:
"…It's an interesting one… That's not necessarily chronological. I think the thing that people will most not understand is they want to go in a linear fashion, but as I learned as a kid, nothing in Star Wars really works in a linear fashion. You do [Episodes] Four, Five, and Six and then One, Two, and Three. So in the vein of that history, when you look at the epilogue of Rebels you don't really know how much time has passed. So, it's possible that the story I'm telling in The Mandalorian actually takes place prior to that. Possible. I'm saying it's possible."
We don't know if the mention of Thrawn is just set-up for the rumored Ahsoka series or more of The Mandalorian story, but fans are definitely curious about how the search for Ezra went. Hopefully, by the time the season ends we'll find out, but as it stands, I think the show should just focus on our main Mando and his child Grogu. We don't want a Fantastic Beasts-level of derailment here.
For now, catch the second season of The Mandalorian now on Disney+.
