The Mandalorian: Taika Waititi is Playing IG-11, NOT IG-88

It's been rumored for a while that Taika Waititi will be playing a character in Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian, and we just received confirmation that he's playing the IG droid that we see in the trailer. What's interesting is, that's not IG-88, the infamous bounty hunter from Empire Strikes Back, but a completely different character.

According to Entertainment Weekly, that droid is IG-11 and the character is described as often getting mistaken as the more famous IG-88 in the show. This must be some meta-joke on The Mandalorian's part because when the photos first came out of IG-11, everyone immediately thought that he was 88.

Though it's cool we have a new IG character in the show, I think it would be funny if we met the actual IG-88 in the show, and maybe they can cast Waititi's co-star in What We Do in the Shadows Jemaine Clement to voice him. He already made some Disney connections with Moana; how about a jump to Star Wars this time?

Personally, I thought that the trailer for The Mandalorian could have included more, but I guess Disney is trying to pace themselves when it comes to this show. I mean, they have to make sure it doesn't overshadow the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as well. Hopefully, we get some more full trailers as November approaches; most likely we could get something in October, but a September trailer is also welcome.

Catch The Mandalorian when it debuts on Disney+ which launches on Nov. 12.
