The Mandalorian Star Pedro Pascal Auditioned for Game of Thrones with an iPhone Video that ‘Looked Like Sh*t’

While he was only on Game of Thrones for one season, Pedro Pascal's Oberyn Martell was one of the most charismatic characters to ever come to the show. With Pascal going on to do way more things since Thrones, showrunner David Benioff reveals that Pascal's audition was kind of low quality.

Talking to Variety, Benioff remembers Pascal's audition:

"First of all, it was an iPhone selfie audition, which was unusual… And this wasn't one of the new-fangled iPhones with the fancy cameras. It looked like s—; it was shot vertical; the whole thing was very amateurish. Except for the performance, which was intense and believable and just right."

While a lot of people remember Pascal's Game of Thrones stint ending with the Mountain crushing his head, his entire presence in that season was very magnetic, and he really played the part of a tragic Thrones version of ‘Inigo Montoya'. Though it would have been great to get more Oberyn, I guess I'd settle with the great performance we had for just one season.

If anything, Pascal's role in Thrones was his big break, and he had since starred in bigger projects from Netflix's Narcos to the Kingsman sequel. Now he's starring in one of Disney's biggest properties, The Mandalorian, and he's also set to be the main villain of the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel.

For now, Pascal returns as Din Djarin in the second season of The Mandalorian which premieres on Disney+ on Oct. 30.
