The Mandalorian Season 2 Just Made Expanded Universe Troopers Canon Again

The latest episode of The Mandalorian Season 2 was certainly a blast considering that it appeared to have referenced the Star Wars sequel trilogy films with a familiar-looking clone. However, Chapter 12: The Siege also teased at Moff Gideon's grand plans that may be an awesome yet terrifying nod at the Troopers that were originally introduced in the Expanded Universe.

In The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 4, it was revealed that one of the mechanics working on the Razor Crest had planted a tracking device on the ship. This was actually ordered by Gideon who was delighted when an officer confirmed that Mando and Baby Yoda can now be tracked. In the final moment of the episode, Gideon admires a row of black Stormtrooper armors.

Although some fans believed these are Death Troopers like the ones that appeared in Rogue One, these were actually Dark Troopers that were first introduced in the classic Star Wars first-person shooter game Dark Forces. These Troopers would later get an update in Star Wars: Rebellion when it is revealed that a later phase of what were originally set to be droids have been turned into Force-wielders wearing the Dark Trooper armor.

Chapter 12 confirmed that Doctor Pershing was using Baby Yoda's blood to create clones due to The Child's "M-count" that could potentially give the clones the power to use the Force. So is Gideon actually planning to take Baby Yoda so he can make Force-sensitive Dark Troopers? Hopefully, the truth will be revealed in the next episode.
