The Mandalorian: Katee Sackhoff Explains Bo-Katan’s Connection With The Darksaber

As the third season of the acclaimed Star Wars series The Mandalorian recently premiered, as expected, it raised many questions that fans are hoping to get answered, one of which is the Darksaber. The viewers were left amazed when Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze wielded the powerful weapon. Bo-Katan is connected to the Darksaber since she has used it in the past when ruling Mandalore. The story of Bo-Katan and Grogu as they attempt to rescue Din Djarin from a cunningly constructed trap by a powerful spider cyborg is told in Chapter 18, The Mines of Mandalore. Now that Din Djarin has the Darksaber, the actress discussed with Deadline how Bo-Katan feels about it.

“We have to go back to see why she’s doing what she’s doing. This is a person who has fought, fought against her people. She’s fought forever and she realizes that doesn’t work. You can’t continue to fight amongst yourselves. I think with Din — I don’t know if I’ll go as far as to say that she respects and trusts him — but she doesn’t not. He’s done nothing.” Sackhoff explained. “If didn’t have the Darksaber, he'd have done nothing that would make him her enemy. I think that her problem is that she realizes that she’s not going to fight her people anymore. She’s not going to fight someone who she doesn’t have a reason to fight. Every single possibility, every place that she’s at right now, every direction she’s done before didn’t work before. That’s what she’s trying to figure out.”

The Mandalorian season 3 shows that although Din Djarin may be the owner of the Darksaber, Bo-Katan Kryze is still more skilled in using it. Pedro Pascal's hero defeated Moff Gideon in season 2, acquiring the fabled Darksaber and assuming control of Mandalore. By obtaining the Darksaber for herself, Sackhoff's Bo-Katan aspired to reclaim this position. According to the lore, the Darksaber must be obtained through battle, and many Mandalorians seem to attribute the Purge of Mandalore to Bo-Katan's acquisition of it in a way that was contrary to the lore. She has lost everything because she does not want to make the same mistake again.

Bo-Katan is proven skilled with the Darksaber, having saved Din from danger more than once. Despite being a capable warrior, Bo-Katan gives the Darksaber back to Din Djarin. He’s trying to get rid of it at the beginning of the season; he’s trying to give it away for sure. But according to the actress, the Mandalorian is indifferent toward the weapon. “He’s trying to get rid of it at the beginning of the season; he’s trying to give it away for sure,” said Sackhoff.

The Battlestar Galactica star also revealed the reason the Night Owls left Bo-Katan. “She says that they abandoned her as soon as she returned without the Darksaber. I think these are people who thought Bo would do anything to lead, that Bo would fight anyone to lead, and that’s what she wanted and that’s why they were following her. And when they saw something in her that they didn’t respect, they left. She lost her people, her home, she lost her family, she lost everything.” she explained.

The Mandalorian season 3 continues next week on Disney+.
