The Mandalorian: Giancarlo Esposito Talks His Character Moff Gideon

Giancarlo Esposito is probably best known for his role as the ruthless Gus Fring in Breaking Bad, but he's set to enter the Star Wars universe as Moff Gideon in Disney+'s The Mandalorian. We don't really know much about the character of Moff Gideo yet, but Esposito gives us his take on his Imperial character.

Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Esposito explains:

"I play a guy who was a warden of the universe… He was in power before the [Empire] collapsed. You don't know if he's good or bad ... but he certainly is a guy who has order in his life. He's an exciting guy because he has all of the equipment and spaceships at his ready."

In the first teaser for Mandalorian, we got to see Moff Gideon surrounded by the black Deathtroopers from Rogue One; plus in the leaked footage from SWCC 2019 from back in April, we also saw Gideon piloting a TIE Fighter.

Esposito is a very interesting choice for a villain, based on the work he did on Breaking Bad alone. With his Fring being very cool and calculated, you can feel that he's the perfect choice to take on an Imperial Officer who was used to keeping the order but has found himself without an Empire to stand behind him.

This is also slightly related, Esposito has a Breaking Bad castmate in Mandalorian as well in the form of comedian Bill Burr. They don't really share scenes in BB, but Burr played Kuby, one of Saul Goodman's henchmen. In Mandalorian, Burr is said to be playing a member of some sort of gang that the Mandalorian teams up with. We don't have any idea if he's going to run into Moff Gideon yet.

Hopefully, we get a better look before November.

Catch The Mandalorian when it airs on Disney+ on launch day Nov. 12.
