The Mandalorian Director Robert Rodriguez Reveals How Boba Fett Fight Scene was Planned

There is little doubt that people have their own favorite scene in the eight episodes of The Mandalorian Season 2. However, most Star Wars fans agree that Boba Fett's fight scene against some Stormtroopers stands out for sheer badassery. But did you know that director Robert Rodriguez chose an unusual method to show creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni how the action sequence would play out?

Rodriguez was featured in the hour-long special Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian Making of Season 2. In the episode, the We Can Be Heroes director admitted that he was a "last-minute replacement" to the original director who was supposed to work on Chapter 14: The Tragedy. Amazingly, Rodriguez called on his sons and used his old Star Wars toys to present the fight sequence featuring Boba because he wanted to make sure the character's return would have an impact.

"I ended up turning a three-page battle scene into a nine-minute battle scene because I was just that excited to be bringing Boba back," Rodriguez said. "I told [Favreau]: 'I've been waiting to see this version of Boba Fett since I was a kid. Boba has to be different, he can't just seem like another Mando. He has to move differently; feel different; occupy a completely different space, and have a weight and gravitas to him that shows why he's such a legend.'"

Rodriguez stated that his aim with the episode was to make sure Boba got his time to shine as if the character wouldn't get another chance to appear in later episodes.

"It needs to satisfy. I don't want to take for granted that he'll show up later in other episodes," Rodriguez said. "He needs to be all things — right here, right now. That's what Boba Fett is all about. This episode needed to say: 'Boba is back,' and that was my main personal mission."

It's exciting to see how Rodriguez really made sure Boba had one of the best comebacks in the Star Wars Universe. With that in mind, we're glad that he is involved in the upcoming series The Book of Boba Fett.

All episodes of The Mandalorian Season 2, as well as the behind-the-scenes special, are now streaming on Disney+.
