There is little doubt that The Mandalorian had several meme-able moments but most fans simply couldn't get enough of that one scene where Baby Yoda calmly sips soup as he watches Din Djarin battle it out with Cara Dune. But how did that hilarious Star Wars moment come to be? Director Bryce Dallas Howard has just revealed that it was inspired by her own children.
Howard recently took part in the ATX Television Festival At Homevirtual panel where she discussed the episode she directed for The Mandalorian. Interestingly, the Jurassic World star stated that it was her children's constant need to know Baby Yoda is safe that led to the awesome scene.
"My kids were on set pretty much every day," Howard said. "And even before we came to set, when it was the storyboards for the episode… when we were just conceiving of things, my daughter would come into the editing room and whenever Baby wasn't on screen, she would lean over to me and be like, ‘Where's Baby? Where's Baby? Where's Baby?'"
The constant concern was noticed by Jon Favreau, who decided to do something about it.
"Jon picked up on that, like, ‘Oh yeah — if the kid is wondering where Baby is, then we need to know where Baby is at all times.'… There was something with the kids where Baby was very real and Baby was in danger and they needed to see where Baby was at all times… They needed to know Baby was safe. And from that a variety of moments came up that were constructed just because we wanted everyone to know Baby was safe," Howard concluded.
In Chapter 4: Sanctuary, Din Djarin ends up fighting with Cara Dune outside a cantina. At the end of their face-off, the two look up and discover that Baby Yoda has been watching them the whole time. Not surprisingly, the scene has turned into one of the most popular memes from the show.
The Mandalorian Season 2 is expected to air on Disney+ this October.
