The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special has a Cruel Joke at Darth Maul’s Expense

Disney+ has just announced the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, and with it we got two new stills from the movie. If you look at one of the photos carefully though, you'll notice that there's a very cruel joke about Darth Maul.

As @WayfinderSW on Twitter has pointed out, in the one photo where the villains are squaring off against the heroes, we get to see Darth Maul, but it's only the upper half of his body. Check it out:

We don't know how this will play out in the movie, but it's definitely a neat piece of LEGO humor, what with Maul being cut in half in the Phantom Menace. I don't think they would have been able to pull off this gag if it was just a regular animated series.

While some are already looking at this through a canon lens, it's probably best to assume that this holiday special won't have anything to do with the main Star Wars continuity—that's why they decided to make everything in LEGO. If the past is any indicator, LEGO Star Wars has always been full of humor, and it's probably the best branch to come out with a holiday special, seeing that so many fans would lose their minds over a little humor introduced in the actual canon.

Rey and droid pal BB-8 head off on a quest to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force, but their visit to a mysterious Jedi Temple sends them careening through time and space. Rey interacts with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and other characters in some of the franchise's most beloved moments, as they try to return in time for a Life Day feast with her friends on Chewbacca's Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk.

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special comes to Disney+ on Nov. 17.
