The next Call of Duty game is going to be helmed by Treyarch. The last CoD game from Treyarch was 2020's Black Ops Cold War, though this studio has been hard at work the last couple of years, helping out with Vanguard (namely in terms of Zombies and the game's competitive mode) and Modern Warfare II to an extent, too.

Treyarch hasn't had the space to work exclusively on their own game for years. Even Black Ops Cold War wasn't originally meant to be a Treyarch game, with Treyarch only taking the reigns from Raven and Sledgehammer after the two studios had trouble working together and collaborating on a project. So, the next Treyarch game will be the studio's first game they truly have the time and resources to polish to a bright shine in a while.

Of course, no official announcement on this just yet, it's only barely 2023 after all, but Call of Duty release dates are hardly surprises. Like just about every Call of Duty before it, we can expect the next Call of Duty game to drop somewhere between October and November of 2024.

Considering it'll be a full two years in between releases, we may well see an earlier release date, in terms of CoD, coming in October, but once again, that remains to be seen. We'll have a good idea when the game is coming out long before it does, though, once marketing for the game starts to kick up.

Call of Duty 2024: Engine

This is an interesting one. One of the biggest criticisms of Black Ops Cold War came down to the game's engine. Its predecessor, Modern Warfare (2019), massively upgraded the tech on offer with its engine, catapulting the series into the modern day. Cold War's engine, on the other hand, while a definite upgrade over Treyarch's earlier titles, felt to many like a step back from the fidelity and polish of Modern Warfare's engine.

However, in 2022, the news broke that the engine powering Modern Warfare II would be the sole engine powering Call of Duty going forward. Of course, with each new game the engine is going to be upgraded and improved, but each Call of Duty dev will be working off of that beloved Modern Warfare engine, meaning Treyarch's 2024 Call of Duty will be running on the latest version of the engine right now powering Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.

Call of Duty 2024: Life Cycle

Modern Warfare II for the first time in franchise history is getting a full-fat two-year life cycle. When we say life cycle in terms of CoD, we're referring to how long that particular game will be the latest CoD available. And Modern Warfare II marks the first time that a CoD will go for two years without a new game.

However, by all accounts right now, it looks like Treyarch has got the greenlight for a two-year life cycle CoD, too. So, that means that when CoD 2024 drops that the next Call of Duty won't be coming until 2026 when presumably Sledgehammer takes back the reigns and drops its next game. A two-year life cycle means more maps, more guns, and ultimately, more content.

This is unconfirmed as of right now, but there are two major ideas floating around as to when the next CoD will take place.

Originally, the idea was that Cold War was going to reboot the original Black Ops while the sequel to Cold War would reboot Black Ops 2, making Treyarch's next game a near-future title much like Black Ops 2. This made a lot of sense Modern Warfare (2019) tried to reboot the original Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare II tried to reboot Modern Warfare 2.

However, more recent speculation and leaks suggest something else. Now, the thinking seems to be that Treyarch's next game will be more of a direct sequel to Black Ops Cold War and less of a reboot of Black Ops 2. Accordingly, the idea is that Treyarch's next game will take place during the Gulf War and get into the 1990s in terms of the time period.

Either way, whether it's recent past or near-future, the idea is that the game will be set in relatively modern times, no during World War 2 or in the far future. It's also expected that CoD 2024 will be another boots-on-the-ground game, meaning that there is not expected to be any jet packs or advanced movement.

Call of Duty 2024: What to Expect

Of course, at this early point, there's little confirmed. But since Treyarch has been CoD games for decades at this point, there are definitely more than a few things we can safely expect to come with CoD 2024.

For one, Treyarch games tend to be balanced a bit more strongly than Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer games with more of an emphasis on arcade action over realism. This also tends to mean longer TTKs than the blisteringly fast TTKs you can find in Modern Warfare II and Vanguard, though not as meaty as the ones you see in Warzone with armor plates.

Another hallmark of Treyarch CoDs, of course, is Zombies. Naturally, it wouldn't be much of a Treyarch game without Zombies, so that's almost a guarantee if there ever was one. What's more is that it's unlikely we'd see a Zombies mode come without classic round-based Zombies action. Of course, like with Cold War, we'll probably see the formula evolve as we did with open-world Zombies experiences, but it likely won't be a Vanguard situation where the game launched without round-based levels and instead a new take on Zombies.

For more information, we'll have to wait and see, but considering all of the above there is lots we can already expect from the next CoD. Make sure to stay tuned and keep an eye out for the next big leak!
