The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson Doesn't Know Why Star Wars Keeps Firing Its Directors

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker coming out in a month or so, and, naturally, the hype for the franchise is at an all-time high. Also helping with the hype are the recent releases of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, along with the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Fans and websites have also been revisiting earlier Star Wars movies to see what they can find and talk about, which soon led to various interviews with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who's promoting Knives Out.

Speaking with Variety, Johnson was asked about the big number of director firings when it comes to the recent Star Wars movies. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were booted off Solo: A Star Wars Story, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was plagued with production problems, and Colin Trevorrow was replaced by J.J. Abrams in The Rise of Skywalker. If you want to add D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's recent leaving of Star Wars, you can do that too.

Here's what Johnson had to say about all of those Star Wars firings:

I can't speak to the experience that anyone else has had. I would caution that other people's sets are like other people's marriages. You think you know what's going on with them, but the only thing that's absolutely true is that you're wrong. I can only speak to my experience, which was an absolute dream from top to bottom, beginning to end. From Kathy [Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy] to Bob Iger to J.J. [Abrams] to all the craftsmen.

All we can do is guess and read the various dirt sheets about why these Star Wars firings happened. Kathleen Kennedy did comment on this recently, somewhat arrogantly stating that some directors were too intimidated to work on these movies, which is interesting and a bit hard to believe.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is showing on December 20. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now available on Blu-ray and will soon be available to view on the Disney+ streaming service.
