The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Says Sequel Trilogy Character Didn't Fascinate Him

You can't deny that Disney's Star Warssequel trilogy showed a lot of promise when it officially launched several years back but unfortunately, it wasn't able to meet or even exceed fan expectations, and two years after the storied Skywalker saga concluded, fans of the franchise are still arguing over the divisive last three films — The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.

The sequels' "overreliance" with the past Star Wars lore didn't exactly help create compelling and original stories and a lot of people, Disney and Lucasfilm missed the boat on several characters, including the menacing Supreme Leader Snoke who easily could've been one of the best cinematic villains in science-fiction history.

The character made its debut in Episode VII and right off the bat, fans got the impression that he'll be a difference-maker in the sequel trilogy thanks to his imposing and terrifying nature. However, that wasn't the case as Snoke was written off as early as Episode VIII with the finale revealing that he was actually a clone orchestrated by the returning Emperor Palpatine.

Now, director Rian Johnson is opening up about the wasted potential of the villain. In a new interview with author Sariah Wilson, Johnson reveals that he wasn't particularly a fan of the character and it's always been Kylo Ren he was fascinated with. According to Wilson, the Knives Out director told her that there was nothing "fundamentally interesting" about Snoke's backstory. Check out the full thread here:

While I don't exactly agree with Rian's sentiments, I can't blame him for thinking the way he did about Snoke considering the fact that he wasn't treated as a huge threat. It's actually a shame because the Supreme Leader could've been so much more than just a setup to Darth Sidious' shocking return. But hey. there's really nothing we can do about it.
