The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Confirms His Upcoming Star Wars Trilogy

It looks like Lucasfilm still wants Rian Johnson to work on his Star Wars trilogy.

Now that Lucasfilm's been focused on marketing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, there's barely been any word on the studio's upcoming Star Wars trilogies by Johnson and by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Earlier this month, Johnson seemed unsure about the future of his Star Wars projects when he was asked about his upcoming set of films from the galaxy far, far away.

This uncertainty sparked speculation that Johnson's trilogy might have actually been cancelled, however, it seems like things are back on track for the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the filmmaker confirmed that he's still set to work on the project together with Lucasfilm.

"Did I say 'if'? Oh god," Johnson answered, laughing, "I have no update at all. But I'm still working with Lucasfilm on it, and they're figuring out when they do what and everything."

The Last Jedi might have become one of the most divisive entries in the Star Wars franchise, however, the film did pretty well at the box office as well as with major critics. Sure, traditional Star Wars fans might not have enjoyed the way the film subverted fan expectations and "misused" legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), however, The Last Jedi did take the franchise to a new direction. This ability to breathe new life into Star Wars is one of the biggest reasons why Lucasfilm asked Johnson to return to work on another three movies for the galaxy far, far away.
