The Invisible Man Finds Director, Dark Universe and Johnny Depp Dropped

Universal had failed to launch their interconnected monster movies with Dracula Untold and The Mummy, and now it looks like they've finally given up on making an interconnected universe. The good news is, movies about classic monsters are still in the works, and they've found a director for The Invisible Man.

According to Variety, the studio has hired Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) to direct the film under the Blumhouse banner. It looks like they want to go more low-budget with this movie, seeing that the production house is best known for pumping out hit movies with minimal budgets.

In other news, Johnny Depp also looks to have been dropped from the film. It was announced back during the Dark Universe reveal that Depp would be playing the role of the Invisible Man, but it seems that this project is going to completely revamp everything. Depp, however, could still possibly appear in other monster movie installments along with previously announced actors like Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe, and Tom Cruise.

Universal's president of production Peter Cramer had this to say about the new approach:

"Throughout cinematic history, Universal's classic monsters have been reinvented through the prism of each new filmmaker who brought these characters to life… We are excited to take a more individualized approach for their return to screen, shepherded by creators who have stories they are passionate to tell with them."

The Invisible Man has no announced release date.
