Now that Invincible Season 4 has come to an end, don’t expect the animated series to faithfully adapt its source material, as creator Robert Kirkman teases bold new stories beyond the comics.

The show is based on Image Comics’ comic book series of the same name, which Kirkman co-created with Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley.

Robert Kirkman talked about where the future of Invincible would go after the conclusion of the fourth season.

While the show is based on a comic book series, the showrunner revealed there would be “more side quests” added to the story, as there is no “dearth of ideas from the writers” on what to include.

“I mean, any lack of new storylines in the television show is not due to a dearth of ideas from the writers,” he told The Direct. “The writers on the show have tons of ideas, and so, yeah, you can expect more side quests and things that will be working their way into the overall narrative of the show as we go on, just because it's exciting to us and it's a fun thing to do.”

Despite this plan, co-showrunner Simon Racioppa ensured that the material would feel “organic to the show” so that no episodes would feel skippable.

“It just needs to feel organic to the show, right? Like, the big thing for us is there shouldn't be any episode you can skip,” he said.

With only eight episodes per season, Racioppa stressed that each installment should move “Mark’s story forward” and remain “important.”

“We might have a great idea for an episode, but if it doesn't fit into the storyline, if it doesn't illuminate some aspect of Mark's character, help him mature, take him to a place he hasn't been to before, that still plays into the whole season, then it can be a great idea, but it's a great idea for something else. So, that's important,” he explained.

The Invincible

Prime Video has officially confirmed the coming of Invincible Season 5, months before Season 4’s premiere in March 2026.

The fourth season ended on a tense, ambiguous note as the Viltrumite War has yet to officially come to an end.

The battle is still at a stalemate, leaving Earth in continued danger. As Thragg and other surviving Viltrumites infiltrate the planet to hide and rebuild their race, Mark Grayson is forced to form a truce to prevent further bloodshed.

That being said, the fifth season is expected to continue featuring the Viltrumite War, with Mark continuing his battle against Dinosaurus. The new season may also see the return of Powerplex as Mark’s arch-nemesis on Earth.

It’s also expected that the ReAnimen and the evil Marks from the Invincible War storyline will continue to be developed, as Cecil hopes to keep this a secret from Mark.

A Flaxan invasion, alongside the return of Monster Girl and Robot, is also expected to happen, which could change the series forever.
