After its initial release last year, The Girl Downstairs is finally getting a Japanese dub with a release date set for July.
This is an interesting show for romance fans, and not just for its story. The series is not exactly an anime. Instead, it’s a Chinese donghua based on a popular South Korean manhwa.
With the show’s Japanese dub release, this may indicate that English-speaking fans will finally be able to watch the series with English subtitles, that is if a streaming platform picks it up in summer 2024.
The Girl Downstairs Japanese Dub Release Date Announced
The Girl Downstairs started as a manhwa that ran from July 2019 to July 2022 in Naver Webtoon. Thanks to its popularity, the series was also released in English via Line Webtoon.
As is the case with many popular manhwa, this series got an animated series adaptation. Unlike recent manhwa-based shows such as Solo Leveling and Viral Hit, its adaptation was not produced in Japan.
Instead, the series was made in China by RED DOG CULTURE HOUSE, and it was streamed on bilibili from April to June 2023. Even though its run was only a season long, it got 22 episodes in total.
Nearly a year after its final episode, Fuji TV announced that it is bringing the show to Japan with a Japanese dub, and it will be released on July 9, 2024.
For the anime’s Japanese dub, the main heroine is voiced by the popular voice actress Maaya Sakamoto. She is best known as the voice of Shinobu Oshino in Monogatari, Ciel Phantomhive in Black Butler, and Echidna in Re:Zero.
Where to Watch The Girl Downstairs in Its Original and Japanese Dub
In Japan, the anime will be released on Fuji TV beginning July 3, with a new episode expected to be released every Wednesday during the summer 2024 season.
There’s no word yet on plans for a streaming release outside of Japan, though there’s a chance that Crunchyroll will pick it up for a streaming release.
After all, this has happened before with a Chinese donghua, as Crunchyroll streamed the Dragon Raja series a few months ago.

There, he discovers that the former idol Doona lives downstairs, though their first encounter was rather violent. Soon, Joon also meets a new classmate named Choi Ira who becomes enamored with him.
All the while, Joon hopes to reunite with Kim Margo, his crush from high school, though he discovers that she has troubles of her own.
