The First-Ever Magic: The Gathering Arena Cash Prize Tournament is Coming

Magic: The Gathering Arena, the latest digital version of Wizards of the Coast's popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering, will let players remotely compete in an open tournament with a maximum $2000 cash prize money.

MTG Arena will be hosting its first-ever cash tournament, Forbes reports. The online event will be open to all interested players over the 18 of 18 in eligible countries, and participants will have the chance to win prizes ranging from in-game currency bonuses up to $2000 USD.

The event is great for players when most Magic players are staying at home and when most card shops are temporarily closed, but according to Jay Parker, Game Director of Magic: The Gathering Arena, the open format has been in the works for some time.

"We've been working on the Arena Open for a while, well before the global quarantine," Parker revealed "We run top-level esports tournaments in Arena, but we also wanted a more open and accessible competitive tournament, and that's where the Arena Open comes in."

As long as players log in for seven matches on May 30 (before getting three losses), players can proceed to Day 2, and they can take breaks at their own discretion and decide when to compete. On May 31, the final day of the event, they need to win at least six out of seven matches before losing twice in order to win cash prize.

"It's the first event of its kind to offer monetary rewards, so we expect there to be a critical mass of players participating," he said. "Day 1 of the event allows you to join throughout the day, and if things don't go well at first, you can always try again. Day 2 requires players to have qualified from Day 1, and we expect that most all qualified participants will want to play the maximum number of games possible to optimize their rewards."

Matches will also be shorter than a typical in-person tournament since the format will be best-of-one Standard instead of best-of-three.
