The Detective Is Already Dead gives a supernatural and post-human twist to the detective genre. Based on an award-winning light novel, it starts off with an interesting and unexpected mystery for the viewer to solve; the death of the legendary detective herself. As this was one of the most hyped and advertised shows of the season, many viewers feel that Tantei wa mou Shindeiru didn't live up to the high expectations, but some are still eager to watch new episodes as they come out. But how many of them can we expect?
In the newest studio ENGI project, we follow Kimizuka Kimihiko, a teenage boy who seems to attract trouble wherever he goes. This makes him a very attractive sidekick to a teenage girl by the code name Siesta, who hopes to become a legendary detective. The two become entangled in the plots of SPES, an organization that mainly comprises post-human androids.
After three years full of adventures and mystery-solving, we are met with a foregone conclusion; Siesta, the titular detective, is already dead. Not that Kimizuka's resolution to lead a normal student life in the future will hold for long. His classmate, Nagisa Natsunagi, who has more in common with Siesta than anyone could suspect, soon approaches him with an absurd request that will get him into mystery-solving once more.
The Detective Is Already Dead is available to stream on Funimation with English subtitles, and a future dub can't be ruled out, given the streaming platform's reputation. According to the popular anime database MyAnimeList, The Detective Is Already Dead is going to run for 12 episodes. At the time of writing, there is no entry of another cour, nor any known plans for season 2.
Given the show's pace so far, 12 episodes seem a bit too few for the story to wrap up, especially since there's already 5 light novels' worth of content. This could either mean that the adaptation will move away from the original, or that there are plans for a second season. Either way, we'll make sure to update you!
