During a reunion panel at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, with Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, and the rest of the Firefly cast, Nathan Fillion confirmed the early development of an animated series based on the cult sci-fi franchise.

In addition to Fillion, Torres, and Tudyk, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau are all set to return to reprise their roles. Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne Cobb, will also lend his voice to the project.

“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve,” Fillion told Deadline.

Being developed through Fillion’s production house, Collision 33, in partnership with 20th Television Animation, the couple Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters will serve as the series’s showrunners.

Allegedly, a script for the new series has already been completed, with a story set in the timeline between the original 2002 series and its 2005 film continuation, Serenity.

Why was Firefly Canceled?

Firefly

Firefly premiered in 2002 on Fox, featuring the misadventures of a group of ragtag smugglers aboard a spaceship called Serenity.

The show was a hit with both fans and critics, but it was canceled after only 11 of its originally planned 14 episodes aired. So, why was the show canceled?

One reason was likely the network’s tendency to cancel shows when ratings failed to meet expectations. The series averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode, placing it 98th in the Nielsen ratings.

It also didn’t help that Fox scheduled it in the Friday night time slot, which was widely considered a “death slot.” The network had already canceled more than 30 shows that aired on Friday nights. On top of that, the episodes were not aired in the correct order.

Fox’s misunderstanding of the series’ tone also resulted in poor marketing that failed to capture what Firefly was really about. All of these factors ultimately led to the show’s cancellation, cutting its run far shorter than it should have been.

Despite this, the series experienced strong DVD sales after its release and continued to gain a loyal following. It even won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series in 2003.

The story eventually continued in the 2005 film Serenity, which gave fans some of the closure they had been hoping for. The franchise later expanded into other media, including comics and two tabletop role-playing games.

So far, however, no release date has been announced for the Firefly animated series.
