The Creator of Magic: The Gathering is Working on Valve's Artifact

Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering, is developing Valve's Artifact, the Dota 2 digital card game, Valve President Gabe Newell announced in a closed-door presentation today, PCGamesN reports.

Garfield, who has an academic background in combinational mathematics and computer mathematics, designed Magic: The Gathering as a grad student at University of Pennsylvania, launching it in 1993, dropped out in 1993, to work on it full time with publisher Wizards of the Coast.

Valve hasn't revealed any details about Garfield's role in the Artifact team yet. However, Valve shared a lot of information about the game, most important of which is that it won't be free-to-play like many of its competitors.

According to IGN, Artifact will feature a marketplace and workshop, much like the one that Dota 2 players can use to purchase and sell in-game items.

No exact release date or price has been set for Artifact but the presentation revealed that it will be released by the end of 2018. It will be available for iOS and Android in mid-2019.
