The Conners Season 4 premiered this week, but Becky Conner (Lecy Goranson) was nowhere in sight. But, it doesn't mean that the beloved character won't be featured in the upcoming episodes. Significant character developments are waiting for her.
What happened in The Conners Season 4 Episode 1?
The Conners aired a live premiere episode this week, and episode 1 kicked off with Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and Dan (John Goodman) navigating their relationships.
Darlene wanted to prove to Ben (Jay R. Ferguson) that she was serious about him, so she decided to make a significant leap in their relationship. Darlene put a deposit down on an apartment that she hoped to share with Ben, but the latter needed a bit more time to think things through.
However, it didn't take much for Ben to eventually decide that living together was not the right thing to do. After all, Darlene dropped a major shocker about Jeff (Brian Austin Green).
She told Ben that she and Jeff planned to go to Hawaii last year, which upset Ben.
Following Ben's heartbreaking decision, Darlene decided to turn to God for help and comfort.
Elsewhere in the series, Dan and Louise (Katey Sagal) are planning their wedding. The latter told the former that she wants to have a big wedding, but Dan isn't on board with the idea.
Louise explained that she didn't initially want to have a big wedding. But since her parents only got married at a courthouse, she wanted to do the right thing.
Fans make a cameo in The Conners Season 4 Episode 1
Fans of The Conners were allowed to appear briefly in the premiere episode.
In one of the scenes, Mark (Ames McNamara) got in touch with the You Can Be A Connor sweepstakes winners, and they appeared virtually as extended relatives.
The fans were written into the episode as long-lost relatives that Mark talked to for a school project.
Following the special scene, the camera showed all the live audiences on the set, who are all fully vaccinated.
The Conners Season 4, Episode 1 was dedicated to the late Norm Macdonald, who passed away on Sept. 14 after battling cancer.
Why was Becky absent from The Conners Season 4 Episode 1?
Goranson wasn't featured in The Conners Season 4, Episode 1, but with good reason. It was revealed that she was at a sober retreat trying to get better.
While speaking with TV Line, executive producers Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan said that Becky's recovery would be at the center of the character's storyline in The Conners Season 4.
"Becky feels like she has her whole life ahead of her again, and she's excited. Her horizon is bigger now, and she's got an opportunity to do a lot of things, and she's going to try to figure out which direction to go in. We're going to see her trying to find new coping skills for life. Initially, she tries some that maybe aren't tenable in the long term, and they create complications," Caplan said.
Helford also confirmed that Becky wouldn't fall off the wagon in season 4, even though sobriety is complicated.
Becky's relationship with Emilio (Rene Rosado) will also take center stage in The Conners Season 4. She will also navigate her romantic relationships without the influence of alcohol even though she's not supposed to be involved with anyone.
"As a newly sober person, she's really not supposed to have a relationship for a year," Caplan said.
"But things don't always go according to plan. If most of your interactions with people in relationships have been while you were drinking heavily, sober intimacy is a very tricky thing. There's a whole different attitude about it. When you're drunk, you don't [overthink it]," Helford added.
What will happen to Jackie and Neville's relationship in The Conners Season 4?
Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) and Neville's (Nat Faxon) relationship will continue to flourish. But the former will struggle with self-acceptance because she doesn't realize just how lovable she is.
Since Jackie's storyline will be explored in The Conners Season 4, Helford confirmed that Metcalf would return.
Will there be other surprise guests in The Conners Season 4?
Other than Metcalf, Caplan and Helford also hope to bring back Jackie's mother, played by 93-year-old Estelle Parsons.
The goal is for Parsons to reprise her role in person and not via FaceTime.
"She is slated to appear, and her relationship with Jackie takes another really interesting turn," Caplan said.
What's the plot for The Conners Season 4 Episode 2?
"After Ben declines Darlene's proposal, she starts to ponder on why she tends to be so negative in life, prompting her to start a journey of self-discovery which leads to Pastor Phil. Meanwhile, newly appointed City Councilman Don Blansky puts Jackie in a tough position as she and Neville are ready to open the new and improved Lunch Box," the synopsis read (via Cartermatt).
Since there's no mention of Becky in the episode 2 synopsis, it's possible that she won't be featured in The Conners next week.
