The Clone Wars Voice Actor Sam Witwer Reveals He Almost Voiced Kanan in Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is currently in its final season and will soon be ending, finally concluding the stories of characters like Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex. We already know what happens to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker thanks to Revenge of The Sith but we're all still intrigued to see how this show sets up the events of that movie. Darth Maul is expected to play a huge role and we can't wait to see his showdown with Ahsoka.

Maul is currently voiced by Sam Witwer who has done a fantastic job as the formerly silent Sith and is no stranger to Star Wars, previously lending his likeness and vocals to Starkiller in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and its sequel. However, the actor recently revealed that there were plans to have him voice Kanan in Star Wars Rebels, which would have been interesting to hear.

As we all know, Witwer would instead reprise his role as Darth Maul and Freddie Prince Jr ended up getting the role of the show's lone Jedi master. Witwer isn't bitter about what happened since he admits that the ‘90s teen actor did a stellar job with Kanan. Aww, that's really nice.

"Rebels, for a second according to a few people at Lucasfilm, was called ‘The Sam Show' because I was Kanan. And then they found Freddie [Prinze Jr] after they heard Freddie's audition. I've got to be honest, I had a certain take on the character, and what I was doing was not better than what Freddie was doing. What Freddie was doing was better than what I was doing in my opinion, and I realized that when I saw it. I was like, wow, this guy is absolutely that character. I think that's the way to go."

It's good to see Witwer compliment his fellow actor and with good reason; Freddie Prince Jr was awesome as Kanan. There was no point where he felt out of place and a lot of people agree that he's the best character in that show. His death is also a tear-jerker and we wish that Star Wars Rebels was a better show with more consistency, kind of like the Disney Star Wars films.

Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars can now be streamed on Disney+.
