The Boys Showrunner Reveals How They Pulled Off Doctor Strange 2 Star's Cameo in Season 3 Premiere

WARNING: This article contains spoilers about the third season premiere of The Boys. Read at your own risk.

The third season of The Boys opened with a scene from the in-universe film Dawn of the Seven where we see the Seven face off Stormfront after it was revealed that she is actually a Nazi just like at the end of the second season. However, instead of Aya Cash, the character was portrayed by award-winning actress Charlize Theron. So how did they nab her to do a cameo appearance in the series?

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke revealed the details regarding how they managed to have Theron show up for a cameo appearance in the series. As it turns out, it's all thanks to executive producer Seth Rogen, who previously worked with Theron in the 2019 film Long Shot.

"The Charlize cameo came about by following our usual pattern of cameos, which is it's the rigorous screening process of whoever returns Seth Rogan's calls," Kripke said. "I think she talked to Seth and [producing partner] Evan [Goldberg]. They had just made Long Shot together. She was so great."

He continued, "I mean, talk about the definition of an incredible sport. She's like, 'Yeah, I'll do a favor for you,' and it's like, 'Great, 'cause it's gonna involve a superhero costume fitting, coming out to see me in the Valley for a full day's shoot, and reading the most ridiculous Nazi dialogue ever with a straight face and totally nailing it. And she was game for all of it."

Antony Starr, who plays Homelander in the series, revealed that they didn't actually meet Theron during filming as she shot her role in secret in Los Angeles while the main cast was filming in Toronto. "You'd never tell when you see it cut together," he said. "It's hysterical, the whole setup."

Theron's surprise appearance in the series also comes weeks after she made a cameo appearance as Clea in the mid-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Kripke insisted that the actress' surprise appearances in both projects almost around the same time is all just pure coincidence when he spoke to Collider. "I was watching [it] with my kids and when that came up, I was like, 'Yes! Yes!' So that was amazing," he said.

It was really delightful when Theron showed up at the beginning of the third season premiere of The Boys since it was a surprise appearance that none of us saw it coming even with her earlier cameo role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While she was only playing Stormfront in the in-universe film, it was cool to see her in costume and have a great comedic moment. It would be interesting to see if the series will have more surprise cameos coming in the rest of the season.
