The Best Magic: The Gathering Block/Set/Year, According to Fans

Over the decades, Wizards of the Coast has released some unforgettable Magic: The Gathering sets or blocks of expansions, and although you'll probably hear different opinions when you ask players their all-time favorite Magic set, block, or Standard period, many players would agree that the Kamigawa/Ravnica/Time Spiral period from 2004 to 2007 was the best.

In a recent Reddit post, a fan initiated a discussion asking their best MTG block/set/year ever, and based on the comments, it's clear that the Kamigawa/Ravnica/Time Spiral years were golden.

Reddit Kaitscralt, who got the top-voted comment, said: "Probably Kamigawa-Ravnica for me. Standard had a huge mix of decks from Tron to GR Ponza to Control to BW Weenie (Ghost Dad/Hand in Hand) to GW midrange to Heartbeat combo to Owling Mine and many more," he explained. "I also love the lore and aesthetic of both worlds - Ravnica less so nowadays, but when the first Rav block first came out, it was really something special."

Although the Kamigawa sets were criticized for having many low power-level cards and some overpowered cards like , the Standard metagame with the original Ravnica set made the format incredibly fun and diverse for players. Many fans also loved the flavor of each of those three MTG blocks (each block usually included 3 MTG sets).

I remember returning to play Magic back in 2006 at the university, when the first Ravnica set was just released. Although I just started playing competitively the year after, I remember a lot of fun Standard decks with Kamigawa and Ravnica cards, and when the Time Spiral set was released, I enjoyed the diverse strategies with the innovative mechanics like Suspend and Morph. I remember decks like "Dragonstorm", "Pickles", and "Tron". The "time-shifted" cards also brought back the nostalgia, giving newer players a taste of old-school themes and characters from Magic's classic plane of Dominaria.
