The Batman: Colin Farrell Says Warner Bros. Refused to Let Penguin Smoke Cigars

There is little doubt that we'll be seeing a completely different Oswald Cobblepot in The Batman. After all, the film will feature the character before he became one of Gotham City's most terrifying figures. However, it looks like there's another reason why the new Penguin is so unusual. Colin Farrell has revealed that Warner Bros. refused to let his character smoke cigars in the upcoming DC flick!

DC fans have a very specific idea of what Penguin is like because of the comics and all the other Batman films. Interestingly, The Batman will still show us an overweight man but with one minor change: this Penguin doesn't smoke.

Colin Farrell recently joined the cast of The Batman in an interview with Jake's Takes where he shared how Warner Bros. didn't allow him to smoke on the set.

"I fought valiantly for a cigar," Farrell said. "I even said at one stage 'can I have it unlit' and they were like no."

It's certainly something new for the character who has always been depicted with a cigar. Although there is a possibility that the studio didn't want the movie to glamorize smoking, Farrell has a more interesting idea of why Warner Bros. isn't letting Penguin smoke and it has a lot to do with Carmine Falcone.

"The Oz that we meet hasn’t embodied the energy of the Penguin that we recognize from the source comics and from previous films," he said of his character. "So I’ll see if it goes again. I’d love to explore it because he’s not an underboss, he’s not a boss, he’s just a soldier of Falcone at this stage. But he has great ambition and dreams of doing big, big things."

It's an awesome tease at Penguin's future and we're hoping we'll be seeing more of Farrell's character beyond The Batman.

The Batman will premiere on March 4, 2022.
