The Batman: Mahershala Ali Almost Cast In Pivotal Role In Robert Pattinson Movie

Everyone might already be looking forward to Mahershala Ali's new take on Marvel's Blade but it looks like the Academy Award winner almost played a completely different comic book character. A new report reveals that director Matt Reeves was eyeing Ali for a pivotal role in the Robert Pattinson film The Batman.

The report comes from The Sneider Cut podcast where host Jeff Sneider stated that Reeves has had his eye on Ali for a long time before the Luke Cage star was cast as Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, Sneider claims that the director was hoping to cast Ali as Commissioner James Gordon in The Batman.

"Now that he's got his own Marvel movie, I don't know that he's looking to do yet another comic book movie," Sneider said of Ali. "But I'm pretty sure he was Matt Reeves' first choice for Commissioner Gordon in The Batman."

So far, Pattinson is the only star confirmed for The Batman and Reeves has not yet announced the other cast members. Is there any chance that Ali will consider taking on the role of Commissioner Gordon in the DC film? Sneider's report reveals that Ali had already met with Reeves about the part so we're hoping that we'll get some good news soon.

It was previously confirmed that Ali will take over as Eric Brooks in the Blade reboot. The character was originally played by Wesley Snipes. Although the project has not yet been given an official release date, it could be one of the first movies in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 5 lineup. The Batman is scheduled for release on June 25, 2021.
