The Batman Director Reveals Major Detail About Catwoman's Backstory

The Batman is Matt Reeves' latest interpretation of the classic DC caped crusader. Featuring Robert Pattinson as the new Bruce Wayne, the film was already earning a lot of hype even before its theatrical release for its groundedness and realistic material. Eventually, more than a month after the film premiered in theaters, The Batman now crossed the $750 Million mark at the global box office, officially passing DC's highest-grossing 2016 film, Suicide Squad.

As much as we loved Robert Pattinson's portrayal of 'weird' Bruce Wayne, one classic character originally tied to Batman in both Comics and live-action was also praised by the fans, and that is no other than Zoë Kravitz's Selina Kyle aka Catwoman. While the film mainly centered on Bruce Wayne, it also puts a heavy emphasis on Selina Kyle, as Gotham's Cat burglar and Batman's strange friend.

Now, in a new behind-the-scenes book of the film, titled The Art of The Batman, director Matt Reeves shared new major information about Catwoman.

"Selina's a survivor. She had to survive on the streets, and she actually lived for part of her childhood in the Gotham Orphanage, just like The Riddler. And so the story's very much about class as well, and about the luxury of being able to choose to become a vigilante, versus somebody who simply has to find a way to survive in the way that Selina does."

While The Batman didn't disclose any information about Selina Kyle's upbringing, Reeves' new detail shapes Selina Kyle's Catwoman persona perfectly and the character's motivation. Unfortunately, Selina Kyle has left Gotham City for good due to believing that the city will never change. Despite the romantic connection between the two, Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne officially parted ways in the film's conclusion.

However, Zoë Kravitz has been getting a lot of praise for her excellent portrayal of Catwoman in Matt Reeves' new Bat-Verse. Although there are no confirmations yet about Selina Kyle's return, Warner Bros. may include her in spin-offs like the Arkham Asylum or ultimately in The Penguin spin-off, where Selina Kyle might fit best.

The Batman is now streaming on HBO Max.
