The Batman Director Matt Reeves Explains Why the Film is Not Part of the DCEU

A solo Batman film starring Ben Affleck has been in the works for years. But when the actor eventually stepped down in the role, director Matt Reeves decided to start from scratch and make it a standalone film instead of being part of the DCEU. While the idea was welcomed by a lot of fans, there are still some who have been wondering why The Batman has to be a reboot. Now, we have an answer from Reeves himself.

In an interview with the French magazine Premiere (via The Batman Film News), Reeves explained why he decided to reboot the franchise instead of making it part of the DCEU. He said, "I told Warner Bros. that I had to be given the freedom to do the definitive Batman movie. Impossible to launch halfway into a Batman, impossible to do it as an amateur! Aim for the stars. That doesn’t mean we’ll get there, but if we leave without ambition, it’s bound to be a disaster. I will not have tolerated to miss on the comic book character that I like the most."

It is understandable that Reeves decided to start from scratch since it would give him more creative freedom to do a Batman movie the way he wanted without relying on the connectivity with the DCEU, especially since Affleck has stepped down on the role. By the looks of all the trailers that were released so far as well as the rumored running time of the film, it looks like the director did get everything that he wanted.

The Batman revolves around the titular hero (played by Robert Pattinson) in his second year of crime-fighting as he uncovers the corruption in Gotham City while dealing with a serial killer known as The Riddler (Paul Dano). The film co-stars Zoe Kravitz (as Selina Kyle), Colin Farrell (as Oswald Cobblepot), Jeffrey Wright (as James Gordon), John Turturro (as Carmine Falcone), Andy Serkis (as Alfred Pennyworth), and Peter Sarsgaard (as Gilson).
