The first episode of The Acolyte featured the shocking death of a main character to the surprise of many fans given the high-profile casting behind the role.

The new Star Wars series is a mystery-thriller set in the High Republic era that follows a Jedi Master investigating a series of crimes that pits him against a dangerous warrior who is on a revenge mission.

While the first two episodes set up the main mystery of the series, they also saw the death of a main character that instantly raised the stakes of the story.

Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for The Acolyte episode 1, so proceed with caution.

The Acolyte Episode 1 Begins with the Shocking Death of Indara

The first episode of The Acolyte opened with Mae (Amandla Stenberg) confronting Master Indara (The Matrix's Carrie-Anne Moss) in a bar and the fight sequence that ensued afterward.

The scene was already prominently featured in the trailers that they released and it was also the sneak peek footage that was shown during the re-release of The Phantom Menace last month.

However, what fans didn't see during the sneak peek footage is the result of the fight and, as it turns out, it concluded with Mae successfully killing Indara.

The Jedi Master's death was a huge shocking moment considering that a high-profile actress was playing the role and fans assumed that she would be a prominent figure in the series.

Unfortunately, Moss' presence turned out to be smaller than we might expect as her tenure in the galaxy far, far away didn't last long and it all happened before the main title credits were even shown.

Despite the early demise of Indara, Moss could still appear again later in the season through flashback sequences where they showed her character's role in an event that led to Mae's eventual revenge mission.

The first two episodes strongly hinted at a tragic event that happened to Mae and Osha when they were young that led to their separation and Indara and three other Jedis were somehow involved.

Indara's demise shows that not every single character that we will see in the series is safe, and it wouldn't be surprising if we witnessed more shocking deaths throughout the first season.

For now, let's wait and see how it all unfolds as it is clear that there is a bigger picture behind the mystery that they're exploring and hopefully a potential flashback sequence with Moss will give more clarity.

New episodes of The Acolyte premiere every Tuesday night on Disney+.
