TenSura is back with Season 3, and if you look the series up online, chances are that you’ll see it be called different names. While its English title is fairly straightforward, here’s what the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Japanese title means.
As with many popular anime and manga, the isekai series has two official titles, as well as a common nickname used by most fans both in Japan and internationally.

Explaining the TenSura Titles
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is a popular anime series that’s based on the ongoing light novel by Fuse which began back in May 2014.
As with most light novels, this isekai series started as a web novel that was published in Shosetsuka ni Naro. Another similarity with other popular novel series is its long title, though it’s far from the longest isekai title.
The series’ official English title works well to explain the series’ premise. After all, the story is about a man named Satoru Mikami who gets reincarnated into another world as a slime monster.
In this slime form, Satoru has the ability called Predator which allows him to devour anything and mimic its appearance and abilities. Soon, he meets Veldora, a sealed dragon whom he makes a deal with.
Thus, Satoru consumes Veldora and his prison, beginning his new journey in the world as Rimuru Tempest.
Given that he’s reincarnated as a slime, many fans outside Japan also affectionately call the series Slime Isekai.
Another more official contraction for the series is TenSura which is based on the series’ official Japanese title, in the same way that OreGairu and DanMachi are short versions of their longer official titles.

In Japanese, the series is officially titled Tensei Shitara Suraimu Datta Ken. The Japanese versions of the light novels also have the title Regarding Reincarnated to Slime printed in English.
This isn’t an exact translation though as a more accurate English version of it is The Affair of When I Was Reincarnated as a Slime.
Effectively, the Japanese title is almost exactly the same in meaning as the title used in the English releases, with the only difference being the words used can make the title seem a bit more formal.
The English title used in the Japanese light novel releases does complicate things a bit. Thus, fans may want to stick to the official English title or the TenSura contraction.
