Thanos' Avengers: Infinity War Backstory Makes Him a Combination of General Zod and Jor-El

Avengers: Infinity War raised a bunch of questions, some of which were unfortunately answered by Disney announcing their plans for the next few years. We now know that Loki is coming back and is getting his own show, along with Spider-Man, who has a movie that takes place after the fourth Avengers installment. Falcon and Winter Soldier/White Wolf/Bucky Barnes are reportedly getting a show as well, so there goes some of that tension.

Oddly enough, one question that fans didn't really think of asking is "how did Thanos survive his planet's destruction?" The villain discussed how overpopulation was what doomed his planet in the climax of Infinity War but he didn't say how he escaped. Thankfully, the Infinity War art book (via ComicBook.com) gives us a great answer and shows that the character's backstory has some influence from the Direct Competition.

When discussing Thanos, the art book claims that he was banished from Titan after his proposition to save the planet was ignored. This makes it seem like Thanos is both Jor-El and General Zod from Krypton since a.) he knew that the planet was dying and was pleading with its people to make it better and b.) his way of "making things better" was killing half of the planet's population, which is pretty dark.

Alien characters with dead homeworlds will always go back to Superman, given how iconic the DC character is, so it's neat seeing some of that Kryptonian backstory work on a Marvel villain. This worked to great succession since it made Thanos pretty sympathetic, though he was still the villain in the end. Maybe we'll actually get to see his exile one of these days, which would be cool.

Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019.
