Taisho Otome Fairy Tale First Impressions
Taiso Otome Fairy Tale tells the story of 17-year-old Shima Takahiko, the youngest son of a powerful family, who grew up without much affection. When he gets involved in an accident that kills his mother and permanently cripples his dominant arm, Takahiko's father banishes him to an isolated countryside residence.
There, Takahiko, who is suffering from depression, believes that he will die alone. To his surprise, a 14-year-old girl, Tachibana Yuzuki, appears at the door and proclaims that Takahiko's father sent her to be his bride.
Now, this premise is definitely very uncomfortable for modern audiences, for obvious reasons. Even more horrifying is the fact that Yuzuki was sold to Takahiko's family by her parents, who were in debt. At the time, a girl could legally be married off at fifteen, which was still terrifying, and Yuzuki was forced to leave school and become a bride a year earlier than that. At least, the anime acknowledges that this is a very scary prospect, and ensures that there won't be much of a love story as such until Yuzu is a bit older.
There's no romance in sight in the near future, but already, the two characters draw some sort of comfort from one another, as they've found themselves in a horrible situation. Takahiko is still absorbed in his suffering but it looks like the characters will eventually try to make the best out of their situation.
