Taika Waititi Won’t Be Returning to Direct Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2

It looks like Taika Waititi is getting benched for the second season of Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

The Thor: Ragnarok director might have been instrumental both as the voice of IG-11 and as the episode director of The Mandalorian season 1 finale, however, Waititi says that he won't be returning to direct any of the episodes of the second season of Jon Favreau's hit Star Wars series.

Taking to Instagram to answer fans questions (via Radio Times), Waititi confirmed his absence in The Mandalorian's next batch of episodes, explaining that he'd have to give up directing for the series because of his conflicting work schedules.

"I'm not directing any of the episodes of The Mandalorian because I was doing another film, a soccer film with Michael Fassbender. After Jojo Rabbit I decided to make a sports film, something I've never done, about a sport I knew nothing about and I still don't," the director explained.

It's such a shame that Waititi won't be directing any of the episodes of The Mandalorian S02. The filmmaker did great work directing the season 1 finale of the live-action Star Wars series.

Then again, the news shouldn't really come as a surprise. Waititi's been in demand ever since he worked on Thor: Ragnarok. The director's probably going to get even more offers now – Waititi's comedy drama Jojo Rabbit received a whole lot of recognition at this year's Oscars, winning Best Adapted Screenplay and earning quite a few nominations.

Maybe Lucasfilm will try to reel in the director for a Star Wars movie. Let's wait and see.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian season 2 is set to premiere sometime later this year.
