Taika Waititi Wants To Stay With Marvel But Not For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Thor: Ragnarok was a huge success for Marvel. Not only did Taika Waititi's debut into the Marvel Cinematic Universe gain commercial success, but it also received critical acclaim with fans and critics calling Ragnarok the best film in the Thor trilogy. However, while Waititi would like to return and direct another Marvel film, the director admits that he has no interest in filling in for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Waititi just recently spoke at FX's Television Critics of America today (via ComicBook.com), and during the event, the director admitted that while he wants to stay with Marvel, he doesn't actually want to work on the third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

"I didn't really," Waititi responded when he was asked whether or not he talked with Marvel about taking on GOTG Vol 3. "For me, those are James (Gunn)'s films."

Gunn was fired by Disney last year after an alt-right extremist dug up inappropriate and offensive tweets that the director made fourteen years ago, launching a smear campaign that changed fans perception towards the director.

However, some fans continue to campaign for Gunn's return. Not only did the director turn one of the most obscure set of Marvel characters into the MCU's most-loved group of misfits, but Gunn was also set to build Marvel's upcoming cosmic universe.

Of course, Waititi respects the films that Gunn built.

"Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone's house and saying ‘Hey, I'm your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.' It feels kind of awkward," the filmmaker said.

Unfortunately, Disney doesn't seem inclined to rehire Gunn anytime soon.
