Taika Waititi On Making The Hulk Speak In Thor: Ragnarok

Though Hulk may never be getting a solo movie ever again, it was still pretty cool to have him show up as a major player in Thor: Ragnarok. It's also interesting how the movie manages to explain how the Hulk has now managed to talk in the film, and director Taika Waititi talks about the decision to make Hulk just a wee bit smarter this time around.

Talking to CBR, Waititi explains:

"Yeah, that was really, just like with Chris, just wanting make it more interesting for Mark to play that character because in the films he just said one or two words and just destroyed everything, and that was the version of Hulk I think that everybody knows. But this version — the smarter version — it's just become so much more interesting and engaging because he's been the Hulk for two years. He's a hero on this planet and he's had more time to just sit with himself and feel comfortable in his own skin.

"And now you can see Hulk sitting still and being kind of like a big silverback. There's there's this moment when he's in the hot tub in his apartment – he just feels like General [Colonel] Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. He's just sitting there, just contemplating things and you can feel him probably ruminating over all sorts of stuff inside his head. And that introspective, that very still version of Hulk, I think is way more fascinating than the guy that just destroys everything."

Based on the other films where the Hulk has made an appearance, Ragnarok was probably the only film to give us a better look at the Hulk as the character. Though the audience is pretty much aware of Banner and his motivations, Ragnarok manages to give the Hulk his own story, and he's a totally different person compared to the genius Banner.

Ragnarok is said to be the beginning of a 3-movie arc for the Hulk, and his story is set to continue some more in the next two Avengers films. Hopefully we get to see some interesting bouts for Hulk this time around. We were supposed to get Gray Hulk in Age of Ultron but the studio decided to save him for a better time. Hopefully it's in Infinity War.

Watch the Hulk in action when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters Nov. 3.
