Taika Waititi May Lead His Own Star Wars Movie

After the release of The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019, the Star Wars movie franchise remains dormant as Lucasfilm has not confirmed any new projects that have been given a greenlight although there are several ones that are currently in the works at the studio.

One of the projects that are in development is the Taika Waititi-directed feature film that has been in the works for a couple of years now. So far, the details remain scarce since the director mentioned that he is still working on the script and it's still far away before it might come to fruition.

Now, a recent report from Variety revealed some latest updates about the project where they reported that Waititi might also star in the film aside from directing and co-writing. They also confirmed that the project remains in development and Lucasfilm might potentially set it for the December 2025 release date slot.

However, they revealed that Lucasfilm is also committed to the Damon Lindelof/Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project that is currently in development as well on the studio and there is also a likelihood that it will be the project that might get the December 2025 slot if they were able to give it a greenlight first.

This latest development on the Star Wars projects is in contrast to the Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins projects which are both no longer in active development according to the report. As for the planned Rian Johnson trilogy, the status remains unknown since he is busy with other several projects.

It is interesting to hear that Waititi may cast himself as one of the stars of his film since it can be a clue on what the story will be although it's not surprising since he has acted in his own films several times before (case in point: Korg in the Thor films).

For now, let's just wait and see whether the project will still happen in the coming months or years as we're getting closer to the planned December 2025 slot and their upcoming announcement in the Star Wars Celebration event.
