Sword Art Online Progressive Anime Announces New Anime Film: Synopsis, Release Date, Teaser, and More

The first film of the Sword Art Online Progressive Anime was already premiered in Japan last weekend. However, it seems that there’s more to look forward to as the film’s official website announced that another new film is also confirmed.

The first film, titled Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night conquered the Japanese box office charts as it sold 225,000 tickets in its first two days alone, earning 349 million yen (estimate USD $3.06 million.) It was screened in both standard theaters and in IMAX theaters in Japan.

The second film, titled Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Kuraki Yūyami no Scherzo (Scherzo of a Dark Dusk), is slated to premiere in Japan in 2022. However, no official date has been announced so far.

For those who are looking forward to the first film to premiere in North America, you don’t need to wait longer as streaming and licensing company Funimation announced that they would be screening the movie on December 3 in the United States and Canada. Screening in Australia and New Zealand are slated for December 9. Unfortunately, there are still no announcements for other regions are film distributors are still considering the restrictions implemented per country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sword Art Online: Progressive anime is based on the light novel series of the same name created by Rie Kawahara. The novel was published in 2012, which is actually a revised retelling of the original novel series, Sword Art Online. The Progressive novel series center’s on Kirito’s adventure as he advances floor-by-floor in the floating castle of Aincrad.

The Sword Art Online: Progressive novels are licensed and published in English by Yen Press. Aside from the original novel series, two manga adaptations were also released.
