Suzume Brings In With $5M US Box Office Haul On Its Opening Weekend

Suzume no Tojimari finally hit theaters in North America and it looks like fans couldn't get enough of the animated film. The latest Makoto Shinkai movie just earned over $5 million at the US box office on its opening weekend.

Box Office Report confirms that The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the big winner for the second week in a row with an $87 million haul at the weekend box office. However, Suzume held its own by taking in a modest $5 million on its opening weekend.

This is already an amazing start at the US box office for Suzume compared to its predecessors. Makoto Shinkai's 2016 film Your Name's overall haul at the North American box office was only a little over $5 million while 2019's Weathering With You took in over $7 million through its whole theatrical run in US theaters.

It's still too early to tell but there is a huge chance that Suzume is set to be Makoto Shinkai's biggest film to date. It is currently the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film with a $256,180,000 haul at the global box office. It is only over $100 million behind on Your Name, and there is a huge possibility that Suzume will overtake the 2016 film in no time.

Suzume no Tojimari follows high school student Suzume Iwato as she meets a mysterious young man who is looking for abandoned areas with doors. After telling him about an old onsen in her town, she follows him and ends up disrupting his effort to close a doorway. This leads to Suzume having to join the man in his mission to close doors and prevent a major disaster from happening.

Suzume premiered in Japan in November 2022 and soon became the second-highest-grossing film in the country that year. It is currently the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film of all time and is expected to do even better in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
