Suicide Squad Director Confirms Fan Theory About Joker's Controversial 'Damaged' Tattoo

While hated by critics, David Ayer's Suicide Squad has been quite liked by a number of DCEU fans who insist that it's better than most people are giving it credit for. Though the movie tries a bit too hard to be "fun," with its random Spotify playlist soundtrack and awful editing, many fans feel that there are certain themes and visual clues that a lot of people tend to ignore. One of those is the widely-panned "damaged" tattoo that Jared Leto's Joker has.

On Twitter, a fan pointed out that this version of Joker is heavily tattooed and grilled because Batman beat the crap out of him, yet didn't finish the job, even though he killed Robin. Since Batman won't end the man, Joker tattooed "damaged" on his head as a way to mock the Dark Knight whenever they come across each other. David Ayer, who previously apologized for how Harley was portrayed in his movie, said the fan theory is correct and even retweeted what the fan said.

Admittedly, the theory doesn't hold much water when you realize that Batman is a psychotic vigilante in this universe who likes killing thugs with his tank. You could argue that Joker just escapes Bruce every time but that's pretty ridiculous given the circumstances. All of this could have been avoided if they made Batman keep his no-killing code but nope, the guy had to end up rediscovering it after meeting Superman and Wonder Woman.

If you liked the movie, David Ayer's Suicide Squad is now available on digital stores and Blu-Ray. James Gunn's pseudo-sequel/soft reboot The Suicide Squad is coming out in August 2021.
