There's a chance Succession Season 4 could be the final installment of the HBO drama. The Succession cast's contracts haven't been renewed, according to Brian Cox, who plays Logan Roy. Does that indicate the end of Succession is near?
Succession Season 4 Currently in Production
Although Succession's future after Season 4 is unknown, fans may expect at least one more installment. Back in 2021, HBO renewed the show for a fourth season, and the cast is already hard at work filming Succession Season 4.
Variety reports that filming began in June and that the following story points can be anticipated:
There is no confirmed release date for Succession Season 4, although HBO appears to be aiming for an early 2023 premiere. According to Deadline, network executives expect the season will premiere before the 2023 Emmy Awards eligibility deadline. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deadline is in May.
Succession Season 4 Cast Hasn't Renewed Their Contracts, Brian Cox Reveals
Succession star Brian Cox was asked about the show's future in an interview with The Times of London. On Succession Season 5, Cox confessed he doesn't know if it'll happen — but the cast hasn't renewed their contracts for another season.
"I don't know," Cox told The Times. "No one's had their contracts renewed. Who knows how long it will go on?"
The actor went on to say that he would rather for the series to end on a high note rather than for it to run for too long.
Naturally, that doesn't answer the question for viewers expecting additional episodes beyond Succession Season 4. The fourth installment is currently in production, which is good news because HBO wants to release it early in 2023. We have that to look forward to, at the very least.
Will Succession End in Season 4?
With Succession Season 4 rapidly approaching — with Brian Cox alleging that he and his fellow cast members haven't renewed their contracts — one has to wonder if the upcoming set of episodes will be the show's final.
Succession Season 4 has not been announced as the final season by HBO, but the creators have stated that they do not envision the series extending much longer.
"I think the maximum would be five seasons, but possibly more like four," writer Georgia Pritchett told The Sunday Times in 2021. "At this point [Jesse Armstrong] is saying only one more [season]. But that happens every time we've got a good end in sight."
Additionally, Jesse Armstrong, the Succession Season 3 showrunner, stated to Entertainment Weekly that he doesn't want to continue the series for an excessive amount of time.
"I think it's not the sort of show which should go on forever, because there's a question set up in the title of the show and I think it's a question you eventually want answered," Armstrong explained.
With that in mind, there could be a reason why the cast members' contracts were not renewed — but we'll have to wait for more Succession updates to find out.
Succession's first three seasons are currently available on HBO Max.
