Studio Ghibli has been active on Twitter (or X as it’s now officially called) over the past months to promote Hayao Miyazaki’s new movie. Recently though, Studio Ghibli deleted its official Twitter account, which shocked many of the studio’s followers.

The official Ghibli Twitter shared a post yesterday, stating that the account will be terminated on November 3 at midnight Japan time.

Right now, the Twitter account has been deleted. This has caused concern among fans regarding Ghibli’s future, though the studio did confirm that the new Miyazaki film will continue to screen in Japanese cinemas.

Ghibil is easily one of the most iconic anime studios, with the studio being called the Disney of Japan thanks to iconic works like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.

Despite Ghibli’s status as a legendary studio, it has not been active on social media. This changed in late 2020 as the studio’s official Twitter account was opened.

Since the account opened, Ghibli has shared sporadic updates about The Boy and the Heron – Hayao Miyazaki’s new film. This year, the account became more active as part of the movie’s promotion.

The Boy and the Heron was released in Japanese cinemas in July, and it has become a big hit both critically and commercially.

With the film enjoying a successful domestic release, Ghibli is winding down promotion for the film. Thus, the studio decided to close its official Twitter account.

This comes as a surprise to many fans. Winding down posts was expected following Heron’s release, but closing the account entirely seems to be a drastic decision.

There are some concerns about what this means for Ghibli in the future. After all, Studio Ghibli has been acquired recently by a Japanese media giant, meaning it’s the end of an era for the studio.

Even though the Twitter account closed, that doesn’t mean Ghibli itself will also wind down its operations.

After all, it was revealed that Miyazaki isn’t going back to retirement as he’s already looking into making another film.

In the meantime, The Boy and the Heron will be promoted by other Twitter accounts. Specifically, US distributor GKIDS is heading the promotion efforts for the film online as it will soon be released in US cinemas.

Ghibli fans can watch Miyazaki’s latest film in US cinemas next month with both English and Japanese dub options.
