After three years of anticipation, fans once again witnessed the return of the beloved Hawkins crew after the long-awaited Stranger Things Season 4 finally premiered on Netflix. The critically-acclaimed series follows a group of friends in Hawkins, Indiana as they befriend a mysterious girl named Eleven, who was later on revealed as the subject of a top-secret government project. Henceforth, the series sees Eleven and the Hawkins gang battling creepy creatures that came from a supernatural dimension called the Upside Down.
Stranger Things Season 4 serves as the show’s endgame and follows the Hawkins gang's return into the Upside Down. Alongside the ensemble returning cast, Season 4 also introduced the show’s most horrifying villain, Vecna.
According to Variety, the sci-fi show broke Netflix's all-time record of 287 Million streaming hours during only its first three days of availability, earning the title for the biggest weekend premiere for an English series, a record previously owned by Bridgerton 2.
Another fan-beloved series Bridgerton 2 premiered on Netflix last March and instantly amassed 193 Million viewing hours on its opening weekend. That record was surely impressive but not until Stranger Things Season 4 arrived, which surpassed Bridgerton 2 by nearly 50 percent. In preparation for Season 4, fans also brought back Stranger Things to Netflix's Top 10 prior to its release as fans were re-watching the previous seasons to catch up before the latest season arrives.
Although the extended runtimes might have boosted Stranger Things in terms of streaming hours, the three-year anticipation is certainly the reason why the show is a massive buzz. Now that the show is approaching Season 4's Volume 2 which consists of two extended episodes, Stranger Things might even break its own record.
Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 1 is now available to stream on Netflix, while Volume 2 arrives on July 1.
