Stranger Things Season 4 Was Originally Going to Kill Off [SPOILER]

WARNING: This article contains spoilers about the events of Stranger Things season 4, volume 2. Read at your own risk.

Not all of the main characters ended up making it out alive by the end of the fourth season of Stranger Things as Eddie Munson bites the dust by sacrificing himself in the gang's battle against Vecna. Max Mayfield almost joined him when she briefly died after suffering from the injuries of Vecna's wrath before Eleven resurrected her. Eddie's death was mourned by a lot of fans online and, as it turns out, there was another character who almost met the same fate.

Speaking recently with Collider, The Duffer Brothers revealed that Enzo/Dimitri, the Russian guard that Hopper befriended in prison played by Tom Wlaschiha, was originally going to be killed off as well during the fourth season finale. Obviously, they didn't end up going with that plan as the character was able to survive the events by the end of the season.

"In terms of who makes it, who lives or dies. I think there was a version where Dimitri, AKA Enzo, didn't make it," Matt Duffer said. "Then he ended up making it. But that's [the most] radical of a departure from the original idea versus what we ended up with."

The Duffer Brothers also discussed their writing process in which they said that "sticking the landing" is always their goal whenever they write and break down the story of the season.

"So when we're breaking a season, that is one of the first things we're talking about is, where do we want this story to end up?," Ross Duffer said. "So the ending is always that goal post. Even as we're breaking episode one, we know exactly where we're going. I don't think we've deviated truly in any season for the finale, we've always stuck to it. I believe the case is the same here."

It is interesting to hear that Enzo almost bites the dust at the end of the season. As I'm watching the last two episodes, it really felt like there was a possibility that he will meet his end and not join Hopper, Joyce, and Murray in escaping from the Russian prison. Luckily, he was able to make it and it would be interesting to see if we'll see him again in the next season now that he has formed a friendship with Hopper.
